Cats can be finicky but that’s part of their charm. If you have a cat or two yourself, you already know that they can do some funny things but believe it or not, they do have a method to their madness. Cats rarely, if ever, do something just for the heck of it. Instead, there’s a specific reason behind each and every action, most of which are innate. If you’re looking at the funniest habit of your cat and wondering why it does that, keep reading because below are some of the funniest things that cats do and why they do them.
1. Making Random Sprints Through Your House
We’ve all seen cats just sitting there, then suddenly taking off for another part of the house. By now, you’re likely used to your cat doing this, but why does he do it? Believe it or not, this means that your cat is bored. Cats have a lot of pent-up energy that needs to be released and if you’re not talking to them enough or making sure that they are getting in a lot of walking and exercising, they’ll respond by sprinting unexpectedly all over the house. Indeed, all your cat needs in this instance is a little more physical activity and the problem should take care of itself.
2. Leaving its Poop Uncovered in the Litter Box
One of the best parts of having cats is that when they “go,” they pretty much clean up after themselves. But if your cat leaves its poop uncovered in the litter box, it usually means that you’ve somehow angered it. Usually, uncovered poop means that you’ve done something that shows you’re the dominant one, which the cat knows isn’t true! It is essentially leaving its poop uncovered to let you know that it is the dominant one in your relationship. And when you think about it, is this really such a big surprise?!
3. Acting Just Like a Small Baby
People tend to talk to animals as they talk to babies, which is good because cats learn this way just like human babies do. If your kitten especially is purring and playing around as if it was a baby, it just means that it wants to be a part of your conversation. It could be that it is imitating how you treat it too but it’s more likely that the cat is doing this so it can join in on the conversation that you’re having. After all, cats don’t like feeling left out either.
4. Acting Like a Crazy Cat
If you’ve had a cat for a while, you’ve likely seen it roll around on the floor, make strange noises, and even run around and then come back. This is usually a sign that one of two things is wrong: (1) it’s bored, or (2) it has an itch or skin irritation that it can’t get rid of. With a little investigation, you can usually determine if it’s the second one; if it is, there are easy ways to take care of the situation and make it feel better. A trip to the vet might also be necessary.
5. Staying up Until All Hours of the Night
The funniest habit of your cat just might be staying up all night while everyone else is asleep, but it’s easy to figure out why. Think about it; cats take a lot of naps so they may simply not be sleepy when it’s time to go to bed. But don’t worry because the solution to this is an easy one. Give your cat lots of attention and play time before you go to bed, and make sure that you feed it a good meal at the same time. This way, it will be more ready for bed and so will you.
6. Making a Clacking Sound When It Sees a Bird
Lots of cats make a clacking sound when they see a bird, even if it’s a bird outside of the window that they can’t get to. No one knows for certain why cats do this but there are two theories. First, they may have pent-up frustration at not being able to get to the bird. Second, it may just be a Pavlovian instinct that the cat makes right before it gets ready to pounce on its prey.
7. Deciding to Give You a Head Butt
Okay, this is a funny one. It looks funny and it feels funny but there is a good reason for it. Basically, when your cat head-butts you, it’s paying you a compliment. The cat is saying that it trusts you and you make it feel safe. Cat experts usually call this action “bunting” but if your cat doesn’t do it, don’t worry because it does not mean that the cat doesn’t trust you. It is likely that it just isn’t the head-butting type of cat.
8. Spending Time in a Small Space
When you find your cat spending a lot of time in a cardboard box or another small space, it’s nothing to worry about. When cats were in the wild, sleeping in large areas made them more susceptible to being captured by their predators. Sleeping in small spaces, on the other hand, makes cats feel less vulnerable and much safer. In other words, it’s nothing that you’re doing; it’s just an instinct from the past. The cat feels secure in a small space just the same as humans do sometimes.
9. Attacking Feet
If you’re chilling out watching television and your cat decides to attack your feet, don’t panic. Feet attacks are just another way that cats like to play with you. It is also practicing pounces and jumps so this behavior is pure fun to it. They can also attack your shoes for the same reason but if you don’t like it, no problem. Just distract your cat with a ball of yarn, a laser, or any other type of toy and the problem should be solved.
10. Biting Nails
Just as with humans, cats can bite their nails when they’re anxious or nervous so this might be the cause of your own cat’s biting its nails. It could also be that it’s giving itself its own mini-manicure so if you notice your cat biting its nails, keep track of how long it does this. If the cat does this a few times and stops, it’s likely that it is simply enjoying a manicure. If it does this over an extended period of time, say for a few weeks, you might want to get it checked out by the vet to make sure that it isn’t stressed about something.
11. Chewing on Odd or Strange Things
Chewing on odd items can be the funniest habit of your cat and the good news is that it is likely one of three things making it do this: boredom, sickness, or anxiety. Cats sometimes chew on items such as rubber bands, plastic bags, and even a pair of socks. Even though it might look funny or even entertaining to you, it could be a cause for concern. A trip to the vet is recommended in this circumstance because it makes figuring out the problem a lot easier.
